 "Great TV" 2010-02-14
By N. Ayres (Atlanta, GA)
Great picture and good sound quality. This is my first HDTV and it looks great with vivid and bright colors. HDTV takes it to the next level and I love Sony TVs. A great combination with my new TIVO HD - the only way to watch TV. Free shipping from Amazon gets it to the curb (or garage if you are lucky), you will need help getting it unpacked and in the house.

"nice tv & what you can connect to it" 2010-02-13
By Todd Chapman (Sterling, MA United States)
I've had this tv for 3 months and I like it a lot. This is a big upgrade from the 27" tube tv it replaces. If you watch any amount of tv and still have an old, small tube tv, a new HD tv will improve your experience in a big way.

This TV: After much research, deliberation, and a number of showroom visits, I decided on this TV. I purchased from another vendor for a bit lower cost, but I did so reluctantly because I have had very good luck with Amazon. The TV showed up well-packaged an in good condition. Set up is easy.

I selected this TV because it is in a bright room with many windows. LCDs are better than plasma for such conditions, I've been told. Also, this Sony has a less glossy screen than other worthy competitors, like Samsung. You can test this by going to a showroom and looking for glare from the store lights on the screens. This TV has worked well in bright conditions.

The picture quality is very good. There are adequate inputs, we have an HD cable DVR, a Sony blue ray player, and an xbox 360, all connected with hdmi (there are 4 hdmi inputs), and a Wii. There is a standard connection for your pc, if the pc doesn't have an hdmi port.

Network / Internet devices: I found that I could view video and pictures stored on my Windows XP PC on the TV using the xbox (connected to a Cisco wireless ethernet bridge, bought at Amazon, works great). To connect to a computer through the xbox, you will need a wired network or a wireless router with an ethernet bridge near the TV. The Blue Ray is a Sony BDP-N460, which connects to the internet and allows viewing of some free and some pay content, including movies, from a number of providers, including Amazon. It is pretty neat and gives choices for on-demand movies that seem less expensive than my cable provider offerings.

To connect multiple devices to the internet you can get a TrendNet ethernet switch at Amazon for $10, which will allow up to 4 internet connections from one cable or wireless bridge. I purchased inexepensive HDMI cables from Amazon, and they seem to work fine (you can pay a lot for cables, the $5-10 versions that I bought work well).

TV sound is OK. I ran an rca cable out to an old stereo and use that for movies when quality sound is desired (obviously a surround sound system would work as well).

Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase of the TV, and the other components that make the TV more functional. We live in an amazing era.

Great picture, great sound, and Sony quality all for a good price.

Others have gone to much greater detail than I care to, but I'll just say I don't think anyone will be disappointed with this TV purchase.

Although I realize this isn't much of a review, I simply wanted to express my satisfaction to others.

 "Dare to Dream!" 2010-02-04
By Jay (So. New Jersey)
The 52V5100 was everything I hoped for from an inexpensive, big-screen, HDTV.

Set up was no effort (open box, remove TV, plug in, turn on) but took 20-minutes to find all of the available channels. The 52V5100 found more than I expected. Not only did it bring in the analogue cable TV channels (I haven't upgraded yet) but also the 50 or so, over the air, digital channels (in the Philadelphia PA area). Therefore, watching analogue cable looked bad on the big screen but there were also all of the local HDTV channels. Watching football on Fox was in HD and much, much better than the regular cable version.

Once the channels were in it was time to be judgmental. My last HDTV was a 32-inch LG and I spent two weeks trying to get the colors the way I wanted them. The 52V5100 was perfect out of the box. Blacks look ideal in programming however some people's jet-black hair lacked definition (too black?). Picture quality looked excellent. No blurring during a football game. Colors looked perfect. Images look good even at angles.

First video test was a standard DVD using an up-scaling DVD player and the images looked very good to me. No blurring through action sequences. Two people said that "King Kong" looked fake. I don't know if that was the movie itself or the player leaving out some detail.

Negatives:

No picture in picture (get what you pay for).

Remote is nothing to be excited about. It's a little thin with a rounded bottom. It doesn't have the Sony "return button" that goes back to the last entered channel while channel surfing. It could be more intuitive by having the primary buttons in the middle. I've had worse remotes (like Comcast's).

Monitor's HDMI slots are mostly on the side of the TV, with only one located on the back.

Sound is average.

Definitely would recommend. Price paid at local Mom/Pop TV shop in January 2010 was: $1,199

Excellent TV. Asked if it was reliable and about it's lifespan? Of course one doesn't know, but we're trusting that Sony will rate 5 stars in these areas as well.

"Red flashing and some sound issues" 2010-02-07
By J. Edwards
This TV has pretty decent sound and picture, but is plagued by a few issues which could likely be resolved with a simple firmware update (if sony ever provides it)

I am talking about the "red flash" issue. This is actually an issue involving automatic jumping up and down of color temperature during normal operation of the set, but has garnered the name "red flashing" since it can become very noticeable during scenes with lots of red in the background as you can plainly see the colors getting brighter and dimmer at random times during the scene. Scenes with deep blue backgrounds (The Daily Show) can exhibit some pretty severe blue flashing at times too.

The sound pops and crackles a bit when you change channels on this TV, and there is a little barely audible fuzz and static on the built-in speakers. The sound on certain HDMI connected devices may not work if you turn them on before turning the TV on. I think these issues also boil down to the firmware.

The inputs on this TV are awesome, and the experience is otherwise great, and the price is very affordable.

If the above mentioned issues can be addressed by firmware (if only the red flash, since I find it most annoying) I will gladly upgrade my rating to 5 stars.

Received in excellent condition, mounted to wall with easy (and only needed one person). Has been an excellent choice in picture, sound and ease of use. Would recommend a PS3 to go with it for ease of accessing internet, and streaming video from Netflix. Haven't played any games on it yet, but sure with the picture quality already seen it will be a great time.

"Stay Away from V series" 2010-01-28
By Arno B. Schwarz (Tolland, CT)
I bought this TV for my living room. This is my fourth Sony TV. I thought it would be great. I have it hooked up with a comcast cable box via HDMI. Every time I went from an SD channel to an HD channel or HD channel ot SD channel my screen went "BLACK", but I still had sound. I had to go back to an SD or HD channel and then it would allow me to change channels. This is crap. I upgraded the firmware, changed the cable box and hdmi cable. It still did the same thing. At times it also shows split screen as well. I am sending it back. I am giving Sony another chance. I recently purchased the W5100 series and could not be more thrilled. Stay away from the V series it is junk!

"Nice television for its size." 2010-01-19
By H. Crosland (Maryland)
I initially started off with the LG 42" and was not impressed with the picture but with this and only losing 2 inches I was very impressed withthe picture quality...here are some of my thoughts:

After playing around with the settings, watching TV, doing some gaming and running some blu rays and standard DVDs thru it here is what I observed.

*for obvious reasons, the PS3 does a better job showing standard DVDs. Upscaling thru a PS3 makes older DVDs look a whole lot better (and worse) which may give rise over the whole double dipping argument.

*Speaking of which, I ran a few standard DVD movies thru just to get an idea of how they would look and if I would consider getting the blu ray and here is what I saw:

Star Trek II and III Collector's edition - @ 120hz it does not age well at all. Between these 2 and Undiscovered Country, they were my faves and the only ones I would consider getting on blu ray, but the upscaling makes it look a lot grainier and "fake".

Sky Captain, 300 and Minority Report - because of the way they were filmed, (the graininess and sepia tones that were used) the visuals are a mixed bag. Would rather watch them at standard def. in 60hz than at 120hz

Saving Private Ryan - does really well upscaled to 120hz. I would be curious to see how this looks in Blu ray.

Predator II - another movie that didn't fare well in upscaling @120hz

Star Wars ESB and RotJ - Looked surprisingly well for upscaling @120hz. Many smaller details I never saw really stood out. I will test the newer ones later.

Lord of the Rings - @120hz, I can wait for the extended edition of the blu ray to come out.

The Godfather - @120hz it looked great also.

The Incredibles - looked incredible @120hz

* Popped in a few HD-DVDs (yes I still have mine attached to my 360) and they benefitted from the 120hz upscale. No surprises there.

* Gaming-wise the resolution is somewhat better. Dragon's Age on the 360 looks sharper and crisper now. MW2 does also but the motionblur could be better.

Assassin's Creed on the PS3 really stands out and actually has me considering switching some of my cross platform titles coming out from the 360 to the PS3.

* TV wise - one thing I did learn is that I cant turn my FIOS box all the way up to 1080i. The TV and box won't register. It goes as far as 720p and then the TV supposedly upscales the pic to 1080p (not sure if that is 100% true). With all the settings on, the picture quality is only as good as the channel and show has been filmed. Depending if you may consider how irritating everything is being handled at 120hz with all the settings on, you could wind up turing some of the most important features off while watching regular TV. Even some of the Hi Def stations had some issues.

 "Sony KDL46V5100 46" LCD TV" 2009-11-24
By Bobby J. Richards (Oklahoma City)
I purchased this TV direct from Sony under a promotion that included a Sony Blu-ray DVD player. Total with tax was just over $1200.00 It all arrived in less than a week which was a pleasant surprise. It took more time to get into the box than it did to set up the system. It works perfectly with my Dish Network HD receiver and a 27 year old Channel Master attic antenna. I could not be more pleased with the picture I get. This set replaced a 42" Plasma TV that was three years old. It was moved to another room because it is still in perfect working condition. The Sony KDL46V5100 does have some features that are less than perfect. I expected that when I bought it. Overall, the set is more than adequate. I have read some reviews on this TV that makes it sound like a problem child. Anything is a problem if it does not work right. We still have lemons in all products we purchase. Some of us get the good ones and some of us get the lemons. And if it comes out of China, it is very lemon prone because of their lack of quality comtrol...maybe I should say their non-existant quality control.

I have found no problems with this set and it has a beautiful picture. The sound quality could be better but it is adequate. Connection to a home theater system requires one with a volume control because the audio output is a fixed level...no big deal. The power cord is permanatly attached to the set unlike most others that have a detachable cord. The inputs are located on the side and hiding the cables is a little difficult. Better design could have helped this minor inconvenience. The unit has four HDMI inputs which is a definite plus, but don't expect to get an HDMI cable with the set. You have to buy your own...and they ain't cheap. A six foot gold Phillips is $34.00 at Walmart. Overall, this set is well worth the money we paid for it and the Blu-ray Disc player. If you are looking for a good buy, I highly recommend the KDL46V5100. If I have problems, you can bet I'll be back here adding them to this review.

"The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" 2009-11-23
By SammySosa21 (san lorenzo, ca USA)
I'll start off with the good stuff with this TV, excellent sound and great picture (except for really high motion which i'll get to later). The sound on this TV exceeded my expectations by a large margin as the sound quality is really crisp and clear. Sony got the sound on this TV right, and i don't think it could get better from just having a standalone TV set. One note: My cablebox makes a poping sound when switching channels - Sony has noted that this is a problem from the cablebox on their website.

The picture is really great once you get the correct settings put in as well (do a google search for best settings). Only use HDMI cables unless your cable box or other device doesn't have an HDMI port for the best picture. One thing you will notice if this is your first dip into HDTV waters is that not all HDTV broadcasts are going to be in true HD quality. Some stations stretch the picture which looks terrible. It's not the Tv's fault however, it's the stations that are broadcasting. Some are good, some are bad, and some are just plain ugly.

Where i knock this down 1 star is for fast motion. Sorry Nascar fans, im talking fast zoomed in motion - mostly football. Most sights that tell you how to calibrate your TV will tell you to turn the "Motionflow" portion of your settings off. I tried it and can say for me personally i can't watch the TV like that because the motion isn't smooth. If i put "Motionflow" on standard it looks better but i wish there was a setting between off and standard, like low for example. Getting back to my point though, i do not recommend this TV for viewing spaces UNDER 10 feet. Pixelazation starts to show up alot at the under 10 feet distance - especially in fast camera moments like football. Over 10 feet in your viewing area and i would probably give this TV 5 stars and not 4. Putting "Motionflow" on standard helps, but it doesn't cure it, and the level above standard is just silly because everything looks really fake. Would a TV at 240hz do a better job of making the motion blur go away? It may, but from what i have been reading on the internet the motion blur is from the TV stations broadcast itself. I don't have a 240hz TV right now (they are a little too expensive) to compare, but i have a feeling that you would still have some of the motion blur. Im just not sure at this point if the motion blur comes from the TV itself or from the HD broadcasts, it's there nonetheless even with HDMI cables and thats why i knock it down to 4 stars.

As a side note i want to add that you should get a Blu-ray player if you like to watch movies. Most DVD's i own (around 500) look pretty bad on the new HDTV set's. Even with upconverting, the quality does not hold. Can you watch it - yes. Does it look good - sometimes depending on the encoding. Does it look great - no, only blu-ray will look great from now on if you purchase any HDTV set. It sucks, but it's the truth.

"Never let down by Sony" 2009-11-16
By Pops in Alabama (Florence, AL United States)
My brother-in-law, who has been into home theater etc. for 20 + years, told me that Sony is the best in electronics. So I have had a Sony DVD player and a Sony Surround Sound unit for many years. But I had always purchased another brand TV. Well, we finally elected to get rid of our old "entertainment center" furniture because we were the last people we knew who didn't have a wide-screen HDTV. I shopped at Best Buy and nearly bought a Toshiba, but I felt like they were jacking me around over $50, so I walked away. When I got on Amazon, I found the Bravias priced just a little more than the other brands. So I read all the reviews and bought the Sony Bravia. No regrets! Now, I have the best TV picture of all our friends! The TV setup was a breeze. I would recommend you shop online for your HDMI cable(s). I found cables for $4, whereas the retail stores like Best Buy have them starting at $39. Don't be ripped off on these cables. As far as I know, they all work and deliver 1080. But be sure to order them about the time you order your TV, because you will want that HD picture as soon as you get this TV.
