Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?
With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience. If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

I just upgraded for a 42" Samsung DLP from a few years and the difference is big. I did some research and liked the reviews I found of this TV. The under $1000 price was the factor with my wife. The picture is great, especially the sports I have watched. I haven't messed with picture setting as I am happy with how it looks out of box. The height of the TV was a factor so this Sony fit the bill.
I have unit played through an Onkyo amplifier so I can't say anything about the TV's speakers. I played some online video's through them and it was OK.
I'm not a big techie and I am having some issues changing the widgets but not a big deal yet. I bought the Linksys gaming adapterLinksys by Cisco Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming and Video Adapterand the TV is online. I did order the adapter from Amazon but canceled it when delivery would take 1 to 2 months.
All in all very happy with this television.

With the available features and quality this was an excellent choice at the price point. Easy to set up, behaves very well with my connected HDMI devices. Overall a great product.

I got this tv from sonystyle. It's a great tv. I have the Samsung40B650. So i make comparisons because they are priced so similarly.
Appearance
Appearance-wise this tv loses to the samsung. There is no glossy screen, but the sony does look good in a bright room. However, sony doesnt swivel. The tv viewing angle is almost 180 and I never have to worry about glares as well. The frame is simple and it looks very professional. The samsung line is pretty and stylish. Both tvs are great, you have to decide whether style or simplicity is what you need.
Sound
HDMI-CEC works great. I got a sony bluray theatre with this product. One remote to control sound is amazing. The tv sound is okay. Because of the way the speakers are position, it kind of looks like it comes from the bottom of the tv, not so much natural. Any flat screen tv will perform horribly with sound if it is paired with 10W speakers.
Features
If you have worked the playstation 3, you will transition smoothly with the xmb crossbar. It's not complicated. Just a different feel.
If you arent using a cable box, TV guide works to provide you with information per channel using your analog coax. Unfortunately it isn't able to decipher the digital channels, so all your HD channels are not identified. You can manually move the channels to the appropriate name, but it does take some time.
The tv is also internet capable. I've used the on-demand amazon. And it renders well for their non-hd shows. It does hiccup now and then. Netflix just became available but it only streams movies you place on your queue. It isn't as advance as the Xbox 360 interface. The tv is also dlna capable where it can stream videos from your computer. The music seems to do well. The video looks awful. Unless its a 720 file. It looks worse than standard def tv. For this reason, i just stick to streaming my videos from my comp on my xbox 360. I dont know if the 360 processes the video better but its definitely not as choppy or pixelated. The tv has updated its firmware three times already. I haven't seen a better response time or any big changes to know what is happening.
Not really a big deal, but you can turn off the illumination of sony when the tv is on. For some reason, manufacturers decided it would be cool to light up their emblem to distract you from your viewing pleasures. Most people dont care. I found it annoying. So thank you SONY!
Channels/Inputs can be labeled with text, not just 'game' or 'dvd'
Gaming
One reason I got this tv is because I hated the gaming on the samsung tv. The hdmi input had a lag which messed up gameplay online. This tv does not have a lag.
Bluray
1080p looks great:)
Overall, the tv is amazing. There are a few turn offs, but this tv is great. The number of inputs are great. The tv color didnt need calibration. I guess i should talk about 120Hz. Yeah, it's there. Never used it. Sony has really lost a few points in reputation based on the cheap lines they put out- the s and l line specifically. The W line is certainly competitive but not cheap. I see the price has gone down fairly well. 900s are a great deal for this tv and I would buy it again.
I know my review is pretty nontraditional. I was trying to fill gaps that other reviews do not. If you have any questions, feel free to ask away!

Make no mistake people, the 40 inch Sony W5100 is a GREAT DLNA complient HDTV. The image quality is pristine. The technology used in the W series is the same as their XBR series without all of the "extras". This TV will even stream Netflix over an internet connection! Really. Sony's stellar design and quality are enough of an extra for me. I got this TV at Best Buy for $900. A steal in my opinion.
I have had the set for the last 2 weeks and have enjoyed watching the Australian Open and NFL Playoffs in HD. Sports look beautiful on this TV. I had a Sony Bravia 32 inch 720p HD, but wanted to upgrade to a larger, full HD set. My bedroom is 12X12 and this TV is large enough to comfortably suit my needs. It's big without being obnoxious. It looks GREAT, has fantastic image quality, and has some cool interactive features to stream content from your computer.
I play games and Blu-Ray movies on my PS3. Games like Uncharted 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time, and Batman: Arkham Asylum look fantastic. The colors are deep, rich, and vibrant. This TV makes these particular games shine in the graphics category. Who knew? Video games that almost come to life from the screen...
I've seen "9", "Up", "Wall-e", "Inglorious Bastards", and "300" all on Blu-Ray on this set. The picture quality is simply breathtaking. Love the animated movies. Colors in those movies are particularly vibrant. Blu-Ray really makes this TV look awfully impressive.
I haven't spent too much time with the Network features of this TV other than using Netflix on it. There are a whole bunch of Widgets on this TV that allow you to check the weather, news, scores, etc. Most of these are useless. I want to report that once again, Netflix works flawlessly over this TV. Picture quality is very good. I'm talking about DVD quality streaming here. This TV can also stream movies and music and pictures from your computer over a network. Haven't done that. Yet.
This is really a great TV. If you can get one for $900 or less, I DARE YOU to find a better "future-proof" HDTV. Like I said before, this TV looks great and has great image quality.
I am not reviewing the sound on this HDTV because I use the optical audio input to connect to my Denon S-301 surround sound system.

Purchased this TV for $750 incl taxes at local B&M store.
Hoped to get better value for extra price since this has Bravia widgets , Internet conn , You tube ... etc
This is after upgrading to the latest firmware as of 01/16/10
You tube videos quality is real bad for 40inch .
Tried Promotional videos from Michael Jackson, they look too grainy . Not MTV or HD quality for sure .
Has a dozen video options .
Yahoo widgets take too long to load , for weather , news .
Has the same issue of light bands (diagnal) from top left and top right corners coming into center fading away.
This issue repeats with 40V5100 series TV too( returned ). Called for tech support , they recommend to decrease backlight ! .
Picture quality is good . Audio is ok .
Might end up returning this too .
