 "Almost Great HDTV" 2010-02-04
By A. Sheffield (Kaysville, UT)
The TV has been great. It has provided great picture quality and I can't complain about the sound. I have HDTV, DVD, XBOX, and a computer all running to it and all of them work great with it. There is no S-video, but I haven't used an s-video cable in years so not a problem for me. The options to adjust the picture are great, and it never really gets warm (like some other TV's tend to do). I have really enjoyed this TV.

The only downside that I have experienced is the audio output (only Optical, not RCA). I wanted to run the red/white audio out to a set of auxiliary speakers, but the speakers don't have optical input and the TV only has optical output. That is probably my biggest and pretty much only complaint.

"No regrets on this one" 2010-01-30
By Noel (SouthTexas)
I have had this TV (LG 55LH40) for two months and have no regrets. What persuaded me to buy this was, #1: All the commendable reviews. #2: A reasonable price. Now (01/30/10) I see Amazon has the price at $1369.00 with free shipping. A couple hundred less than I paid and that should make it an even sweeter deal. It is unlikely you will find fault with this one. Great picture. Decent sound.

"LG TV should be a top consideration for LCD shoppers" 2010-01-29
By G. D. Grubbs (U.S.)
We were looking to get a large LCD TV in the end of 2008, and therefore focusing on 52 inch TVs. The prices seemed to be unstable, and since we missed a really good deal, we kept waiting for it to happen again, especially after Christmas that year. The prices went up instead.

So around Christmas 2009, we started again, but this time 55 inch LCD TVs were the big thing, and after looking at several, this LG seemed to have the best combination of features at the price point we were evaluating. I was on the edge of getting it when it was at $1479 one morning, but didn't. Later that afternoon it was $1399, less than the local price, and with no tax and free shipping with white glove delivery and setup, it was hard to beat, so I jumped on it. (As I write this review, it's $1380!)

This TV has a beautiful picture, and the sound is fine (to me) without attaching a surround sound system. I think I'm going with LG products on TV's and Blu-ray players for the foreseeable future, as the quality appears to excellent. Hopefully, they won't become like Sony and after many years let everything go to pot. I can't bring myself to buy anything Sony anymore, with all the products that I've had by them more recently that fell apart far too soon.

Just a word about the delivery if bought through Amazon -- it was a wonderful experience. I was able to schedule a delivery time range, and when they brought it, they took everything out of the box, set it up, and took all the trash away, so no TV box out for trash pickup advertising to everyone what we got. I would buy a TV from Amazon again in a heartbeat, if I need one.

And after the experience with this LG TV, I think I'm going to need a smaller LG for my bedroom pretty soon.

I would also suggest the LG BD 370 Network Blu-ray Disc Player or LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player for those in the market for a Blu-ray player, especially with Netflix streaming.

 "I'M EXTREMELY HAPPY, CAN'T YOU TELL??!!!" 2010-01-25
By Rex
Everybody has one except me. So I went out looking for an LCD TV and I finally found one. This is the perfect size for my living room. Any bigger would be just too big (and you will start seeing pixels if you get a large TV in your small living room.)

Plug the TV, plug any regular rabbit ears antenna, and in no time, you may start to receive digital TV signals. I was able to pick up ABC, CBS, KPBS, and Fox channels all in High Definition just by using an old antenna. I don't watch that much TV so I'm not going to subscribe to Cable or Satellite. The channels I got are more than enough especially during prime time. I plan on renting or buying BluRay movies.

I haven't purchased a BluRay player yet, but when I do, it will be the LG BD390 (because it has NetFlix, CinemaNow, etc. internet-based entertainment services (This TV model does not have it. The model LH50 TV series does.). So, I haven't really tested this TV to its full potential. The LH40 and BD390 will be a great combo!

I like the EnergySaver mode. You can select presets (Min, Med, Max, Auto, etc.) on how much energy you want it to save. It will dim the picture which is perfect because at night when I dim my living room lamps, the picture is just too bright in the room. Dimming the TV using the EnergySaver modes helps with this issue.

The swivel stand is very useful.

If you're about 7 feet away and you have 9 guys sitting side by side in the living room, about shoulder-to-shoulder width apart from each other, The guys in the middle get the best viewing angle while guys #1 and #9 will be at a viewing disadvantage. The picture becomes dim for them, but still acceptable.

There is no S-Video input in case you plan on hooking up your old S-Video devices. Waaa! It would have been nice, but not really necessary.

In the first week of use, I noticed 2 dead pixels. This is a problem with any LCD (even my Samsung 24" computer LCD monitor has a dead pixel). But it's not noticeable at all when you're 3+ feet away and watching your favorite programs. You have to be about 4+ feet away so you don't strain your eyes anyway, dummy!

All in all, this is a great LCD TV. Don't think that low 70,000:1 contrast ratio is sub par compared to other LCD TVs out there. Sure, others will have their whites more white, and their blacks more black but this TV is just perfect. See if you can find this brand new for $1099. I did! ;)

"Great TV & Great price" 2010-02-09
By E. Steel
I purchased this 37 inch LG LCD HDTV for my dad for a Christmas present. He loves it! Set up was a snap, a few screws to attach the base, one screw to secure it to the tv stand, connect up the antenna and componet cables. Simple to use, all the functions are pretty much intutitive. The fact that the tv knows what inputs are present is very nice, don't have to go through them all or try to remember what you have plugged in where.

Over that air recepition is also very good, my dad lives in a pretty rural area, and the converter box that he used on his old set didn't bring in all that many stations, I was actually a little worried about how many HD channels he would recieve to take advantage of the HD of the LG. Well, it is amazing how many channels he gets compaired to the convert box, and the picture on the LG on HD stations is amazing. The 120hz was worth the little extra it costs to get into the LH40 series, I have not detected any motion blur. The clear voice option is great for my dad, makes dialog very easy to understand across the room.

The USB port is a nice touch, my dad, not being of the computer and email age can view pictures that I would normally email to others. I can drop my thumb drive in the mail or plug in my camera when I'm visiting and my dad can see all the pictures I email to the rest of the family. My dad has 40 or 50 years of slides I am in the process of scanning to a thumbdrive so he can pop it in the tv and have his own slide show at anytime without having to drag out the projector and screen.

I am very pleased with my purchase and my dad is very pleased with his tv, couldn't be happier.

 "Nice TV" 2010-02-08
By Jose A. Hernandez (TN, USA)
Bought two of these at Christmas for our daughter & son. Extremely easy to set up and the swivel stand is a nice feature. The picture is superb and the sound is very good for this kind of TV. We had originally shopped Sony, but the sound on their comparable model was horrible. So far these TVs have been nothing short of excellent!

 "no PIP :-(" 2010-02-05
By Eric Book (O.C. CA)
120Hz or higher is a must. 2.5 response time is a big plus. Love the picture quality and the options for all the color control. Blacks aren't as deep as others and like most flat panel TVs, the sound isn't anything special. The glossy black case can be a distraction if you have a light source anywhere in front of the screen because it will reflect back. All TVs should have non-reflective material for this reason. My main regret is that there is NO PICTURE-IN-PICTURE! I blew it! I assumed all modern TVs would have this. WHY NOT? It would be great to slpit the screen between the PC and another input. I do a lot of computer work sitting in bed and would like to watch TV while I work. PC input looks GREAT if your computer output can match the resolution!

"Blueray works on it great! No AV audio out. Sound sucks" 2010-02-02
By C. Zheng (Colorado)
I bought this TV mainly for XBOX gaming and Blueray purposes and both work great. Picture quality is top notch while I played my favorite scenes from Transformers. It's ass kicking. XBOX gaming experience has improved too due to the 120Hz and high contrast ratio.

The sound of the TV is the biggest drawback. You will need to hook it up to a speaker system for sure. But you better have a newer receiver. Mine was 10 years old and only accept AV cables (red and white). This TV only has fiber optical Audio output. So I have to by pass the TV and hook my DVD players, and XBOX directly to the receiver (sound wise).

If you are just looking for a nice HDTV to watch TV and regular DVDs, then buy a 60Hz regular 1080p or even 720p. My 720p Samsung LCD works just fine while watching direct TV. This TV does cost extra because of its 120Hz and high contrast ratio features. You don't need it unless you are going to use it for blue ray, XBOX 360 and PS3.

 "Great LCD TV" 2010-01-18
By reader (AL United States)
I'm not a big TV fan, but my wife is so after a lot of price/quality comparisons and research I got her the LG 42LH40. The only other LCD HD tv I have bought is a Samsung and I have been sold on that brand. After comparisons the LG picture is as good as the Samsung's. Colors and options are fine. I found that on line Black Friday sales after Thanksgiving probably are the best times to buy TVs.

After you search and find the best price, always remember that Amazon and its affiliates is one of the safest ways to order online. I always use Amazon if possible.

 "Amazing!" 2010-01-18

I absolutely LOVE this tv! Everything about it is amazing. My boyfriend has a Sony, which I thought was one of the best, but the LG is far better! Its so easy to set up, has great sound, and the picture can't be beat. BEST TV EVER!

"Great Picture, Too Many Settings" 2010-01-17
By Brian Harrison (Maryland, USA)
Firstly, the display quality on this television is excellent. I am running cable TV through it, along with a Wii on component cables and an Xbox 360 on HDMI. Everything looks great... after you spend hours messing with the settings! For example, your brightness on Game Mode with component cables can be different than Cinema Mode with HDMI. While it's good to have those options, if you multiply all of the settings for each mode, then multiply that with each input, you literally end up with hundreds of settings to change before you can sit back and enjoy it! You can make things easy by relying on the Intelligent Sensor, but, in my experience, it always makes the picture very dark. Ultimately, once everything is set your way, the picture is beautiful! Another plus is the low weight - One person can carry it once it's out of the box.

"probably had the lip-sync fix but the problem persists" 2010-01-17
By John W. Spetz (USA)
I bought this on Amazon in late December of 2009 so it probably had the lip-sync fix but the problem persists. For me the sound is a little behind the video. People close their mouths before you hear the last quarter of the last word they spoke. It's very close but it looks terrible if it's even a little off. Everybody who watched it commented. I tried to fix it by connecting the digital optical out from the LG to my receiver but that did not work. I finally fixed it by connecting the cable box optical out directly to the receiver.

"Best Christmas gift for my husband!" 2010-01-09
By Margaret W. Ulrich (Tarpon Springs, Fl)
First of all I was so scared to order something like this without seeing it. I read all the reviews and trusted Amazon. When it was delivered to my mother's as it was a gift the man offered to set it up. I was impressed. I bought the 42" and did not know if it would be the best size. It is perfect. The picture quality is outstanding and I love that the sound is so clear my husband doesn't have to turn it up so loud the neighbors can hear it. He LOVES this tv. I felt I got a good price on Amazon and with no tax or shipping it was great. I am sitting here watching it now. Great tv. Don't hesitate if you are thinking of a flat screen. LG has done a superior job with this!
